Booking Your Test

  • Book online through the official RSA website
  • Current fee is €45
  • Valid photo ID from a short, closed list — see below
  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment

The ID you may bring is a closed list, and hard copy only. A photograph of a document on your phone is not accepted. It is a Public Services Card showing your photograph, a passport valid or up to 12 months expired, an Irish Passport Card, a national identity card from an EU or EEA state or Switzerland, an Irish category B or category A learner permit or full driving licence, an Irish Travel Document, or a current Ukrainian driving licence. A UK driving licence is not accepted for the theory test.

Is the theory test changing to 80 questions? No. The car (category B) test is 40 questions in 45 minutes, with 35 needed to pass, and the RSA has announced no change to that format. The 80-question theory paper you may have heard of is the Stage 1 exam for trainee driving instructors, not the learner test.

After You Pass

Once you pass the Theory Test, you can apply for your learner permit. Your Theory Test Certificate is valid for 2 years from the date you pass the test.

Sitting the theory test from Dún Laoghaire

There is no theory test centre in Dún Laoghaire — the centre on Pottery Road is the driving test centre, a different test. Learners in this catchment book a theory test centre in Dublin city and travel in, so it is worth picking your slot with the journey in mind — an early-morning appointment means travelling inbound at the busiest time of the day.

You can sit the test in any centre in the country, so choose on convenience rather than proximity. When you are ready to prepare, our theory site has 40 questions free to try, with the full question bank and timed mock exams on a paid plan.
