Where it is

Highline Building, Bakers Point, Pottery Road, Dún Laoghaire, A96 KW29. Opposite the Lidl on Pottery Road. Put the eircode into your phone rather than the name — searching "Dún Laoghaire test centre" has been known to offer the ferry terminal.

Arrive with time in hand. Parking around Pottery Road fills up, and the difference between a candidate who arrives twenty minutes early and one who arrives at the door on the hour is visible before the car has moved. You are allowed to sit in the waiting room; you are not allowed to settle your nerves once the test has started.

The wait, honestly

Those are the estimated waits to a test invite at the end of July 2026, from the CSO's own dataset rather than from another driving school's page. Deansgrange runs a little longer than the national average, and it has improved a lot: the same figure was 20 weeks in July 2025.

For comparison, in the same month Finglas was 9 weeks, Wicklow 13, Tallaght 21 and Raheny 29. If you are near a boundary it is worth knowing you may choose a different centre — but choose the one whose roads you have actually driven, not the one with the shortest queue. A test passed in fourteen weeks beats a test failed in nine.

Plan backwards from the wait, not forwards from today. Twelve EDT lessons at one a week is three months on its own, and you cannot apply for a test until six months after your first learner permit. Book the test as soon as you are eligible; you can always move it, and you cannot conjure a slot that is fourteen weeks away. Source: CSO table ROA36, July 2026.

What to bring — and what turns you away

Every item here has sent somebody home without a test. The fee is not refunded when that happens.

The test fee is €85, paid to the RSA when you book and not refunded if you arrive without the documents above. If you sit your test in my car, the insurance, the NCT and the L-plates are my problem rather than yours — which is the single most common reason people ask about car hire for the test.

How the test is marked

Knowing this changes how people drive on the day. Most candidates who fail believe they failed on the manoeuvre they fluffed; most actually accumulate faults on ordinary driving, quietly, across the whole route.

The arithmetic is the useful part: eight grade 2 faults spread across a whole test is still a pass, while four of the same fault is not. Observation at junctions, mirrors before signalling, and road position are the three headings that quietly reach four.

What happens on the day

1. Paperwork. Permit and insurance certificate checked before anything else.
2. Technical checks. Three questions about the car — where the brake fluid goes, how you know a tyre is legal, what a warning light means. Asked at the car, not in a room.
3. Hand signals. Demonstrated stationary. People forget these exist because nobody uses them in traffic; they are still on the test.
4. The drive. A minimum of 25 minutes on the roads around Deansgrange and Dún Laoghaire, including manoeuvres and, on most routes, a hill start.
5. The result. Given to you at the end, with the marking sheet. You will know before you leave the car park.

The roads around the centre

Test routes out of Pottery Road use the ordinary residential and arterial roads of Deansgrange, Monkstown, Blackrock and Dún Laoghaire itself — the same roads you will drive for the rest of your life if you live here. That is the argument for learning on them rather than somewhere quieter.

I will not publish a route list. The RSA does not release them, the routes change, and a page that claims to know them is guessing at your expense. What I can do is spend your pretest lesson on the roads around this centre, at the time of day your test is booked for, so the junctions that catch people out are ones you have already met.
